Wayfinder is bestelling author William’s brand new book that helps you chart a course to success.
FOUR SECRETS FOR CHARTING A COURSE TO PERSONAL AND PROFESSIONAL SUCCESS
In 2022, bestselling Book of Tides author William Thomson travelled to Polynesia on a sailing expedition to study ‘Wayfinding,’ the ancient art of natural navigation. His goal was to explore how these timeless techniques could work alongside modern technology, but the journey took him down a very different path…
At the time of his Polynesian voyage, Thomson was navigating a crossroads in life. After the abrupt end of a long-held dream to circumnavigate the globe and grow his Tide School business, he found himself adrift and unsure which direction to steer. But unexpectedly, through immersing himself in the wisdom of ancient navigators, William realised that the same principles Polynesian wayfinders used to discover islands in the ocean could also guide him through the uncharted waters of life.
Drawing on these timeless lessons, Thomson developed his Wayfinding Philosophy with four secrets for charting a course toward lasting success, whether it’s at home or work. With vivid analogies from the natural world, actionable insights, and stunning illustrations, Wayfinder equips you to thrive in today’s chaotic world. Just as ancient explorers trusted nature to guide them toward distant islands, Wayfinder will help you align your ambitions with your true purpose and steer confidently toward the life you deserve.
SNEAK PEAK
INTRODUCTION
When I set off on my great adventure to sail around the world, I was unknowingly guided by a faulty navigation system. I believed success would bring me happiness - that achieving ambitious goals like renovating an old boat, launching it into the water and sailing it across the world’s busiest shipping lane would fill the void within me. But even as I ticked off these achievements, a nagging emptiness remained. Success alone wasn’t enough.
Ten years later, I’ve come to realise that true fulfilment isn’t just about reaching a destination - it’s equally important to celebrate the process of getting there. The two are symbiotic: focusing solely on one at the expense of the other is a sure way to get lost. Wayfinder is the story of how I came to understand this, sharing the lessons I learned at sea so you can use them to navigate the uncharted waters of your own life and chart a course to success, both at home and work.
During long hours at sea, I developed what I now call the Wayfinding Philosophy: a system inspired by the ancient Polynesians who navigated vast oceans without charts or instruments. These seafarers trusted in their ability to read nature’s signs - waves, stars, clouds, and birds - and followed a clear purpose while remaining flexible enough to adapt to the unknown. Applying these principles to my life, I realised they are just as effective for charting a course on land, where unpredictability, competition, and complexity can often leave us feeling adrift.
The core of this philosophy lies in the Four Secrets, practical strategies that have transformed how I approach my work, goals, and challenges. These secrets serve as your compass, map, and guiding star, helping you navigate uncertainty, overcome obstacles, and steer toward meaningful success. At the beginning of every day, and before any specific challenge, I tell myself; “I am a master of embracing chaos and unpredictability, an expert at aligning the cardinal virtues, a pro at sharing my gifts with the world and a champion of celebrating the magic of this moment.”
These secrets serve as your compass, map, and guiding star, helping you navigate uncertainty, overcome obstacles, and steer toward meaningful success.
The first secret, Embrace Chaos and Unpredictability, teaches resilience. Just as storms and shifting tides are inevitable at sea, uncertainty is an unavoidable part of life. But instead of fearing it, I have learnt to accept and even welcome the unexpected. Chaos often reveals new paths and opportunities that we’d miss if we clung too tightly to a fixed plan. This secret helps you reframe uncertainty as a chance to grow and adapt.
The second secret, Align with the Cardinal Virtues, is our moral compass. Ancient values like courage, wisdom, and integrity are not outdated ideals - they’re powerful tools for navigating today’s challenges. When you make decisions rooted in these virtues you build trust, strengthen your relationships, and stay grounded in who you are, no matter how turbulent things become.
The third secret, Share Your Gifts with the World, reminds us the importance of purpose. In your career, it’s one thing to pursue success for personal gain, but it’s another to do work that serves others. Whether it’s solving a problem, mentoring a colleague, or creating something meaningful, when you share your skills and passions in service of others, your work becomes deeply rewarding. Purpose fuels motivation, making the journey more fulfilling.
The fourth secret, Celebrate the Magic of This Moment, brings peace of mind. In my earlier years, I was always focused on the next milestone, never pausing to appreciate the progress I’d made or the experiences along the way. But true success isn’t just about reaching your goals; it’s about enjoying the process. Whether it’s a small win at work or a shared moment with your loved ones, learning to find joy in the present gives your journey balance and meaning.
True success isn’t just about reaching your goals; it’s about enjoying the process.
The lessons in this book were learned the hard way - through mistakes, failures, and moments of doubt that forced me to adapt and grow. By distilling these experiences into the Four Secrets, my aim is to give you a shortcut, sparing you the struggle and showing you how to apply these strategies immediately. Think of this book as your instructions to ‘Treasure Island’, helping you chart a course toward clarity and purpose.
So, let’s set sail. Whether you feel lost or are embarking on a bold new journey, the tools in this book will help you navigate the uncharted waters of life and find purpose along the way.
